What can you do when you live with someone who does not eat the way you do? I am in this situation and in the past, I would let it effect me. I would give in and eat the not-so-healthy items in the house. This time however, I am not letting it effect it me in the least. Is it sheer willpower? Maybe partly, but after awhile, willpower doesn’t last for me.

Take it Seriously and Put Your Foot Down

Like I mentioned in my first post, it is all about mindset. You can do anything if your mind is made up to do so. If you are the main cook in the home, then everyone who eats your cooking will either adjust to healthier meals or fend for themselves. That is all there is to it. You have to put your foot down.

You need to explain to everyone that you are eating in a specific way now and won’t deviate from it.

Don’t make cheeseburgers tonight because that is what everyone wants. You have to be disciplined. Reserve your cheat meal for your specified cheat day (Saturday for myself.) The best case scenario is that others in your household will give in and begin eating healthier meals too.

If you’re a parent and have picky eaters, you are probably in the situation of cooking your own meals and then your family’s meals. You can always make healthier versions of their favorites. Everyone will adjust.

How to Avoid Temptation

Dont be caught off guard. Keep healthy snacks in stock!

You have a chocolate craving and there is a chocolate bar on the counter, what do you do? You don’t need to give in. This is where being prepared works. You know your temptations and cravings. Keep healthier snack alternatives on hand. Craving salty snacks, keep roasted pistachio nuts in the pantry. There is a healthier alternative for almost everything. Research and keep them in stock.

If you are not prepared, it will be much harder. You’ll give in because it is there. You’ll justify eating junk because it’s a tiny piece or think you deserve it because you’ve eaten well for the past two days. Bullcrap. Don’t let the excuses take over. Always be ready with your healthy stash.

It Gets Easier

Don’t stress too much over the junk lying around the house. Yes, if you can do it, get rid of it all. However, if you can’t, always be prepared. Keep your meals in stock, including snacks. Snacking is what will probably tempt you the most. As you become accustomed to eating healthier, it will get easier. Temptation will not be as huge an issue because your mind is set.

I stay focused Monday through Friday. Saturday, I give in to my favorites. Stay focused and you can deal with non-healthy eaters with no problem.
