HIV-positive patients with larger waistlines may be at greater risk for memory problems, according to a new study. Exposure to combinations of certain anti-HIV drugs could play a role in this reduced mental function, researchers said.

“Interestingly, bigger waistlines were linked to decreased mental functioning more than was general obesity,” said study author Dr. J. Allen McCutchan, at the University of California, San Diego, in a journal news release.

In the largest and longest head-to-head comparison of two anti-clotting medications, warfarin and aspirin were similar in preventing deaths and strokes in heart failure patients with normal heart rhythm, according to late-breaking research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2012.

American Heart Association”Although there was a warfarin benefit for patients treated for four or more years, overall, warfarin and aspirin were similar,” said Shunichi Homma, M.D., lead author of the study and the Margaret Milliken Hatch Professor of Medicine at Columbia University in New York.

In the 11-country Warfarin versus Aspirin in Reduced Cardiac Ejection Fraction (WARCEF) trial, researchers followed 2,305 patients with heart failure and normal heart rhythm for up to six years (average 3.5 years).

MONDAY, Jan. 23 () — Shedding some light on why stress might be bad for you, a new study finds that parts of your immune system ramp up when you get into personal conflicts with others.

It’s not clear how this effect of stress may make you sick, but the activated parts of the immune system — which cause inflammation in the body — have been linked to conditions such as diabetes and cancer.

“The message is that the flotsam and jetsam of life predict changes in your underlying biology in ways that cumulatively could have a bad effect on health,” said study co-author Shelley Taylor, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
